In an SMT production line, AOI inspection is usually placed before or after the reflow oven. Pre-reflow AOI helps check component placement issues such as missing parts, wrong parts, polarity errors, offset, and skew. Post-reflow AOI focuses on soldering defects, including solder bridges, insufficient solder, tombstoning, pseudo soldering, and poor solder joints. For DIP and THT production, AOI can be used both before and after soldering. Before wave soldering or selective soldering, AOI checks whether inserted components are missing, reversed, misplaced, or incorrect. After soldering, AOI inspects the bottom side of the PCB for solder defects such as bridging, pin holes, insufficient solder, excessive solder, and weak joints. Dual-side AOI can inspect top-side components and bottom-side solder joints in one process.

In a conformal coating line, coating AOI is used to verify whether the protective coating is applied correctly before or after curing.
