Two New Engineer Assistants Learn Side by Side: Mastering The Screening & Transfer Table

Our workshop had a small but meaningful moment this week. Two of our newest engineer assistants sat down together at the screening & transfer table and ran a hands-on learning session focused on one question: how do you properly inspect and operate this station?

Neither of them waited for a formal class. They took the unit apart in discussion, walked each other through the detection logic, and compared notes on the daily checks that keep the table running clean. Watching two people who joined us only weeks ago teach each other is exactly the culture we want to build.

Both are part of I.C.T's standard onboarding track for new engineers. Every newcomer enters with a clear assessment system — defined milestones, periodic evaluations, and a checklist of skills they must demonstrate before they are signed off on any station. No one is left guessing what "ready" actually looks like.

Just as important, each new engineer is paired with a mentor — an experienced engineer who guides them through the first months, answers the awkward questions, and signs off on real work. The mentor relationship is what turns a checklist into real competence. This week's session was a direct result of that setup: the mentor set the goals, and the two assistants owned the learning.

The screening & transfer table is a good place to start. It sits at the heart of the line, moving boards between processes while flagging defects along the way. Knowing how to read its detection signals and how to use it correctly is foundational — get this wrong and every downstream step pays for it.

We will keep sharing these moments. New engineers learning out loud, in the open, from each other and from their mentors, is how the team gets better without waiting on a training calendar.
